Honorary Grand Marshal

2024 Honrary Grand Marshal: Jay Lee

Oxford Pride is honoring the memory and legacy of Jimmie “Jay” Lee by naming him as an honorary Grand Marshal for Oxford Pride 2024. We lost Jay Lee far too soon–he was just 20 years old–but he made a strong impression on those who knew him.  His friends and family have celebrated the UM Social Work graduate not only for his vibrant spirit but also for his unwavering dedication to social justice within the LGBTQ+ community. Known for his exuberant drag performances at Code Pink, Jay was a beacon of confidence and a source of inspiration. His friend and fellow Social Work student, Jose Reyes remembers Jay’s influence vividly. “It took only seeing one of his performances to give me the confidence to get on that stage myself,” Reyes recalls. Jay’s performances weren't just entertainment; they were a rallying cry for others to embrace their true selves, encouraging them to step into the light with boldness.

Beyond the stage, Jay’s compassion translated into tangible actions, like helping organize a baby formula donation drive, showcasing his commitment to addressing community needs directly. This spirit of generosity was part of his character, deeply rooted in his personal interactions and his broader ambitions. Tayla Carey, Jay’s sister, encapsulates this sentiment perfectly, “This is a loving, caring person that would give you the shirt off his back if you need it.” Her words not only depict the kind of person Jay was but also underline the profound personal loss felt by those who knew him best. Jay’s legacy of love, resilience, and advocacy continues to inspire the Oxford LGBTQ+ community. He will be represented in the Oxford Pride parade by his family and friends, ensuring that his spirit marches on, guiding and encouraging the community towards a more inclusive and compassionate future.

Note from Jay Lee’s family: We greatly appreciate the love and support that the community has shown, especially all those planning Pride this year.  We appreciate you so much; the love you have for Jay Lee does not go unnoticed.
